Cultural Awareness

As first nations people of Australia it is important that Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander people are acknowledged properly in all settings. A traditional welcome to country should be planned where possible to ensure that the traditional owners of a particular part of the country are invited to formally welcome visitors and patrons. As there are many cultural groups within Australia it is important to remember that the the rightful owners of the particular region or district that you are working in are approached. Unfortunately there isn't a list that is available that details what individuals and organisations should be contacted to perform such tasks, however you may be able to contact organisations such as the Department of Indigenous Affairs (in WA), the Commonwealth Indigenous Coordination Centres or its equivalent to check who the appropriate contacts are in your area.

It is highly recommended that for those individuals and organisations who are working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, that a cultural awareness training and or orientation is promoted and provided. There are many people and organisations who provide Cultural Awareness Training and Orientation and again, you will need to check and confirm who is available and most appropriate in the region/district that you are working.
